Last February 23, 2012, in line with the celebration of Rotary International Anniversary, the Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila was invited by Rotaract Club of Mapua Institute to their Sky Lantern Event. Also present during the celebration were Rotaract Clubs namely: RAC DLSU, RAC SIC, and RAC PATTS. The event was held at Baluarte de San Augustin, Intramuros.
Participants from the different Rotaract Clubs enjoyed the sky lantern activity, as some of them just experienced it for the first time. Before the activity began, participating Rotaract Clubs members were briefly introduced to one another. Participants also got to enjoy the beautiful fireworks that went on nearby. The activity started by forming groups of three participants. At first, most of the participants were clueless on what to do. After Rotaractros from RAC Mapua gave instructions, the participants then helped one anther’s lanterns until they flew to a certain level in the sky. Rotaractros had not only experienced a new activity, but they also developed the value of patience, perseverance, and teamwork. The Rotaractors had to exercise patience as they waited for the proper level of fire in the lantern to be reached in order for it to rise on its own. Perseverance enabled the Rotaractors to hold the lantern properly even though the hot wax was already streaming down to their hands just to make sure that they were doing their task properly. Teamwork was key since the activity was totally a collective effort of the team. It just cannot be accomplished without helping one another. Seeing that their team effort had led to the success of the activity brought about a lot of satisfaction on the part of the Rotaractors. The event was indeed a fun yet unique learning experience for the Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila and other Rotaract Clubs! Congratulations to Rotaract Club of Mapua Institute!

The Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila (RAC-Chinatown – Manila) under Rotary International 3810, Philippines recently attended the 4th SaturDate General Meeting of the Rotaract District 3810 last October 8, 2011. It was held at De La Salle University – Manila, hosted by Rotaract De La Salle University and Rotaract Club of Manila. The SaturDate was enriched with a seminar on Digital Marketing conducted by a well known Digital Marketer of our time – Mr. Carlo Ople. Mr. Ople is a Filipino public speaker and marketing consultant. He currently is the CEO of Catalyst Interactive Marketing and serves as the multimedia head of TV5. Mr. Ople is the first Certified E-Marketing Consultant in the Philippines. Rotaractors enjoyed this professional development seminar as Mr. Ople, opened and widened the views of the Rotaractors in terms of blogging, advertising and marketing with the help of the digital multimedia that we presently have. Mr. Ople also inspired a lot of Rotaractors to fight the shadows of their great ancestors, to take hold of their dreams and be the best that they can ever be. The second half of the SaturDate, was a time to mingle and to learn about the different projects of the different Rotaract clubs in and outside Philippines. The Rotaractors were able to learn the different culture, like the Rotaract Club of Subang, Malaysia which has their own trademark of cream pies for their birthday celebrant. District Rotaract Representative (DRR) Clarice San Jose delivered her State of the District Address (SODA) 2011. DRR Clarice San Jose named the goals of the district such as Increasing Rotaract Fellowship, Strengthening the ties of Rotaract Clubs and most important is to instill “Makadiyos, Makatao at Makabayan” to Rotaractors, to name a few. DRR Clarice proudly announced that The Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila sponsored by Rotary Club of Chinatown-Manila was officially recognized and chartered by Rotary International last September 15, 2011. DRR Clarice showcased to us what the district had already accomplished and what is in store for us. These include the regular monthly meeting – SaturDate, area meetings and New Generations which held the District Solo Singing Contest last September 10, 2011, Alay Lakad 2011, International Coastal Clean Up, the upcoming Oktober Dance Fest, ongoing End Polio Movement, , and New Generation Conference last October 9, 2011. The recently concluded 8th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference was one of the highlights of the report. Our very own Director for Professional Development Avin Ong shared his experience to the Rotaractors and encouraged the Rotaractors to join the 9th and the 10th APRRC which will be held in Thailand and Taiwan respectively. The SaturDate left a big imprint to our Rotaractors as they continue to see the bigger, better picture of what the Rotaract club is all about.
Last October 27, 2011, The Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila headed by Changemaker President John Alexiz Tan, together with the club community service committee members Mr. Glen Merwin Khu and Ms. Leslie Chua joined Valenzuela City’s national children’s month program celebration. Six thousands kids were the main participants. The event was entitled ”Local Council For The protection of Children (LCPC) para sa Bright child: Pakilusin, Palakasin at Pagtulungan natin!” led by its CWSD Head Ms. Dorothy Evangelista.
As one of their partner sponsors, the Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila donated brand new toys for the children. These toys were also used as part of the giveaways, together with other prizes for the eight 4-5 years old contestants who showcased their talent in story telling, and for the raffle prizes which were given to the children audience. The event was very successful and Ms. Dorothy Evangelista gave her heartfelt thanks to the organization, together with the plaque of appreciation for being their partner. We are so happy to be able to witness the smiles from the children and their excitement to play their new toys. In addition, she said, “Maraming bata ang na pasaya ng mga cute na laruang nabigay ninyo. Salamat ng marami.” She was also hoping that the organization could be able take part in their future community events. The Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila supports the Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) – the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in advocating the “End Polio Now” which began since 1988. Rotary began immunizing children against polio in 1985. Its main goals are fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. Rotary club members all over the world have volunteered their time and personal resources to reach more than two billion children in 122 countries with the help of oral polio vaccine. Rotary International has been committed to eradicating polio worldwide since 1985, gathering millions of volunteers, creating awareness and fundraising activities to provide immunization and vaccination campaigns. Rotary club members all over the world have volunteered their time and personal resources to reach more than two billion children in 122 countries with the help of oral polio vaccine. To this date, the number of polio cases has decreased to 99% worldwide. But it doesn’t end there, Rotary members are confident that a 100% isn’t impossible to achieve. The main goal of this campaign is not to lower down the rate of polio, but to put a final end to it, because as long polio threatens even one child, children and even adults will remain at risk. Some initiative from our fellow Rotaractors: The end polio campaign and Rotary Logo at the SM Mall of Asia LED globe. Rotary International marks October 24, 2011 as World Polio Day. RAC-Chinatown – Manila members and officers alike took the initiative to join and advocate the virtual pledge of END POLIO NOW. Day by day, more and more Rotaractors started to create their virtual pledge at http://www.thisclose.net/making the Philippines at the top 5. They boldly share their virtual pledge by making it their profile picture in their account on facebook, a social networking service and website. In their own little way, they were able to share this information to their family and friends. RAC-Chinatown – Manila is very happy to have been part of the END POLIO Campaign.
Once eradicated, polio will join smallpox as the only two human diseases ever eradicated, fulfilling Rotary’s promise to create a polio-free world. |
