Last October 27, 2011, The Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila headed by Changemaker President John Alexiz Tan, together with the club community service committee members Mr. Glen Merwin Khu and Ms. Leslie Chua joined Valenzuela City’s national children’s month program celebration. Six thousands kids were the main participants. The event was entitled ”Local Council For The protection of Children (LCPC) para sa Bright child: Pakilusin, Palakasin at Pagtulungan natin!” led by its CWSD Head Ms. Dorothy Evangelista.
As one of their partner sponsors, the Rotaract Club of Chinatown-Manila donated brand new toys for the children. These toys were also used as part of the giveaways, together with other prizes for the eight 4-5 years old contestants who showcased their talent in story telling, and for the raffle prizes which were given to the children audience. The event was very successful and Ms. Dorothy Evangelista gave her heartfelt thanks to the organization, together with the plaque of appreciation for being their partner. We are so happy to be able to witness the smiles from the children and their excitement to play their new toys. In addition, she said, “Maraming bata ang na pasaya ng mga cute na laruang nabigay ninyo. Salamat ng marami.” She was also hoping that the organization could be able take part in their future community events. The Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila supports the Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) – the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in advocating the “End Polio Now” which began since 1988. Rotary began immunizing children against polio in 1985. Its main goals are fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. Rotary club members all over the world have volunteered their time and personal resources to reach more than two billion children in 122 countries with the help of oral polio vaccine. Rotary International has been committed to eradicating polio worldwide since 1985, gathering millions of volunteers, creating awareness and fundraising activities to provide immunization and vaccination campaigns. To this date, the number of polio cases has decreased to 99% worldwide. But it doesn’t end there, Rotary members are confident that a 100% isn’t impossible to achieve. The main goal of this campaign is not to lower down the rate of polio, but to put a final end to it, because as long polio threatens even one child, children and even adults will remain at risk. RAC-Chinatown – Manila members and officers alike took the initiative to join and advocate the virtual pledge of END POLIO NOW. Day by day, more and more Rotaractors started to create their virtual pledge at http://www.thisclose.net/making the Philippines at the top 5. They boldly share their virtual pledge by making it their profile picture in their account on facebook, a social networking service and website. In their own little way, they were able to share this information to their family and friends. RAC-Chinatown – Manila is very happy to have been part of the END POLIO Campaign.
Once eradicated, polio will join smallpox as the only two human diseases ever eradicated, fulfilling Rotary’s promise to create a polio-free world. The Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila happily attended the recently concluded Jazzin’ Manila event held at Manila Hotel Tent City on October 15, 2011. The event was hosted by P.I Jazzfest Foundation and Manila Hotel. The event featured jazz artists: Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin, Dennis Chambers, the Bleu Rascals, the Jazz Fusion project, and many more! Hundreds of music enthusiast, including a few celebrities, flocked the event to listen to good music and to have fun. RAC Chinatown – Manila members took the opportunity to hold a fellowship at the event itself – to get to know more about each member. Many were very much appreciative and honored to have attended Jazzin’ Manila; most of them went home with a deeper appreciation for the musical arts because there was so much power while the music played. The Rotaract Club of Chinatown Manila, under Rotary International District 3810, honored the induction of the prestigious Rotaract Club of De La Salle University – Manila held last October 14, 2011 at Manila Pollo Club, McKinley Road, Makati City. The induction included the pledge of both officers and members to be committed to serving the causes of the Rotaract club.
Later on, the Rotaract Club of De La Salle University – Manila shocks the room with a big surprise, as they called out the president of the Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila to sign the sisterhood agreement. Everyone was astonished.Both clubs believe that signing the sister-club relations will strengthen the mutual understanding and promote goodwill and friendship between the officers, members and the two Rotaract clubs together with their respective communities. Both clubs also believe that the establishment of sister-club shall be a concrete step to discover new approaches in pursuing common efforts in undertaking club, community, professional, international and youth service projects that will give life and meaning to the observance of Rotary. After the induction was adjourned, all attendees started a fellowship party to celebrate the grand event. The Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila and the Rotaract Club of De La Salle University – Manila looks forward to a very fruitful partnership. Last October 9, 2011, the Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila, was able to attend the New Generation Conference 2011: It Starts Within, held at Universidad de Manila, hosted by the Rotary Club of Manila Centennial.
The conference focused on how we can achieve the changes we want in the world through simple acts of initiative. Aspiring young leaders was challenged to take the first step to promulgate change, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Let us all together take the first step of change towards our future! Hundreds of participants were very eager to apply the new things that they’ve learned in the conference, and looks forward for to transforming themselves in young leaders. Last October 1, 2011, typhoon Pedring stepped foot on the Philippines. Many families living near the sea shore were greatly affected; some houses were washed away by the big strong waves. In addition to that, these families lost a lot of their belongings; others even lost their loved ones.
Spearheaded by the U Happy Events and Project Pearl, The Rotaract Club of Chinatown – Manila were able to extend help in the relief operation in Ulingan (Smokey Mountain), Vitas Tondo, . Each family was able to receive goods like, slippers, can goods, noodles, and cash. Though it was still windy and raining that day, the beneficiaries patiently waited for their names to be called. We feel happy to see them go home with a smile of hope to face the day. |
